What is the most important habit you can adopt and apply in your life?
Is it meditation, exercise or maybe getting up early?
Not! This habit is almost never mentioned, and it is the most important because it helps you to start and not give up on changes and new habits.
List of new habits
Have you ever made a list of New Year's resolutions? You decided what you want to change, told yourself that this year will be yours, wrote down your decisions, e.g. to exercise more, get up earlier and eat healthy.
While you were making these decisions, you were probably really excited and energized, even proud of yourself just for thinking about it.
And indeed, you started the new year by getting up earlier, eating salads and lighter food, going for a run and going to the gym...
You started to notice results, but then what happened?
One day you stayed longer at work, and you didn't really feel like going to the gym. You heard somewhere that it's not good to exercise when you're tired, so you decide to go home. You opened the fridge in search of something to eat for dinner, but the burger caught your attention more than the big bowl of salad.
You've consoled yourself that you've been working really hard on your goal for the past few weeks and that you deserve a day off.
How did your plan progress after this? Failed to maintain all the habits?
It is because of this one day off that our good habits begin to slow down in the coming weeks. We start to sleep longer again, get up later, skip the gym and jogging a few times, choose unhealthy food...
After a few weeks, almost all good habits are gone and we are back to where we started.
Why didn't we manage to stick to our plan and maintain a good habit?
The main reason why we fail to stick to a plan and maintain new, positive habits is the fact that we lack the most important habit called COMMITMENT.
The definition of commitment would be - an engagement or obligation that limits freedom of action which would mean that you no longer have the freedom to do anything other than what you have committed to.
How to develop commitment?
There is no simple answer to the question of how we can have and develop commitment. Perhaps the best answer there is to think long and hard about what you are committing to and make a realistic plan.
For example, let's say you currently go to the gym twice a month. You made a decision to improve your exercise and appearance and said to yourself, "I want to start exercising as much as possible!"
Most people would resolve to hit the gym three times a week from now on. That may not seem like much to you, but this is actually an increase from the 600%. Going from 2 departures a month to 12 departures a month is a drastic change that makes it really hard to stay committed.
What kind of plan should we make so that they don't give up?
Instead of such drastic decisions that you will surely give up, try to make small changes - instead of three times a week, try to go once a week for the next three months. During that time, it will become easier and easier for you, and you will have the feeling that it is a part of your daily life, like, for example, brushing your teeth or taking a shower.
Once you manage to maintain this habit, increase the number to twice a week, and stick to that number for the next 3 months.
After that, you can increase the number to three times, then after 3 months to four, etc.
Focus on just one new habit
Also, it is recommended that you focus on only one new habit at a time. You can try to introduce several new changes at the same time, but in most cases it ends in giving up.
If you really think you can do more, then decide on more new habits. And in this case, the key is commitment and never going back to your old habits, because if you can't honor your commitments, you'll never achieve the goal you want.
Creating a new great habit is like building a house
Imagine that all your habits are bricks that you stack on top of each other. Commitment in this example would be like the mortar that holds all the bricks together. If there is no plaster, ie. commitment will all fall apart.
Over time, this stacking process becomes fun and, in a way, easy. We begin to imagine the "house" we are building as incredibly beautiful. This is what our life will look like when we combine all our habits. The only thing that matters is that you use the commitment to keep them in place and to practice them, otherwise you will end up where you started.
Take enough time to build commitment for each habit and you will end up building an amazing "house" that will last a lifetime.
